Karate Belt Test 4/9/10
Posted April 11th, 2010 by Mom | Comments (0)
The boys had a belt test in karate on Friday. C received his yellow belt and J received a piece of tape on his current belt (which means that he isn’t quite ready to go up to his next belt, but nevertheless tried for it).
Here is J getting his piece of tape from Mr. Keith and J getting ready to bow.
Here is C getting his yellow belt and giving Mr. Keith a “high five.” (Thanks for the great pics, Anne!)
C – Field Trip 4/8/2010

C’s class went on a field trip today to the Botanic Gardens. It was a great day, with the temperatures in the lower 60′s – a few clouds to keep the sun out of our eyes and just enough sun to remind us that Spring is upon us.
C loved all the beautiful flowers and colors. He is my child that appreciates prettiness/beauty and nature thus the trip was an absolute joy.
In between looking at the beautiful flowers, trees, ducks, fish, etc. there were “stations” where the kids could do hands on crafts. C planted a marigold plant, colored a bookmark and made a butterfly out of a plastic baggie filled with biodegradable paper and flower seeds , pinched together with a clothes pin. There were other stations that we didn’t get to do, as our time was limited. One of the stations that would be fun to go back and do was making a flower out of tissue paper with a chenille/pipe cleaner stem. The tissue paper was white and the kids “colored” the tissue paper edges by dipping it in Kool-aid water. Neat idea!
Here are some pictures of the neat stuff C brought home – namely the pretty flowers that he picked, the bookmarker that he drew and colored, his marigold he planted and the butterfly he made…
Easter, 2010
Posted April 6th, 2010 by Mom | Comments (0)
After a wonderful morning at church, the family went to my parent’s house for lunch and egg hunting.
We were all tired that morning, as on Saturday B and my dad planted an oak tree in our front yard where one of the pear trees had died last year. Poor things had to dig up the stump of the pear tree! I thought I had had it ground up and as it turns out only the first couple of inches below the grass were ground up, as is standard from what I’m told. What did I know?! Sorry guys!
While Pop and B dug up the stump and planted the tree, my mom was at her house spreading pine needles in her flower beds, and I worked on the guttering at our house and spread 23 bags of mulch. Whew!
Later that evening while I baked the bunny cake that we would have for dessert after Easter lunch, J and my dad took the company truck back to work (we had used it to get the bales of pine straw, mulch for me, and the oak tree). Once J got home he got to dye his Easter Eggs. C had already had a chance to dye his Easter eggs while J was away with Pop.
In the pictures, the basket of eggs with just a few eggs in it are the hard boiled eggs that the kids dyed. They had a good time and J has almost finished eating the eggs – the white part only. Just like me, he throws away the icky yellow ball center of the hard boiled egg.
This year B and I didn’t put candy in the eggs. I purchased M&Ms in little packages to put in the eggs, but one middle of the night, J got into the bag and ever so gently opened almost all of the packages and put the M&Ms in a pile under one of his pillows. So much for that candy…
I also purchased Smarties to put in the eggs, however I found out that Smarties are too long to fit into standard eggs… So much for that candy as well. We will have it in the house for treats I guess.
So, with no M&Ms and no smarties there was no candy in the Easter eggs. It turned out okay. B and I told the boys that for each egg they found we would give them 10 cents. They were happy and so were we.
After lunch with my parents, I went outside in their backyard and hid the eggs. The eggs with no candy in them. The kids had a blast finding them. This was their first year to show their competitive sides. I kept hearing, “I’ve got more eggs than you!” J ended up collecting 38 eggs and C found 28. We rounded it up to $4.00 each. My Dad matched their $4.00, PLUS they each got a golden or silver egg with an additional $5 in it! Wow – these kids know how to have a good Easter egg hunt!
C was the only one to show a tiny bit of disappointment. Evidently I didn’t hide the eggs difficult enough to find. Therefore, after all the eggs had been found and counted, B took C’s eggs and hid them again. B offered to hide J’s eggs again, but J wanted to hide them himself – for him to find… okay…
All in all a great day.
