News Flash - B tries a new food

08.7.2007 | 11:23 pm | Everyday Life

Okay, this only happens about every 7 years, so it deserves to be noted that B tried a new food. He tried corn pudding.

Now, this is not a food that I would have necessarily tried and I have tried A LOT of new foods just to show B that trying them wouldn’t kill me, so he could give it a shot. Not.

B’s review: The corn pudding seemed to consist of corn and cornbread and something else. It is the something else that concerned me. B doesn’t eat “something else.” He has a specific pallet and does not deter from this. Even for the love of me. (I guess I need to ask B what his motivation was for trying this new food.)

My only concern is that the “something else” might not be healthy. The last time I remember B trying a new food, it was crescent rolls. And we all know how nutritious THOSE are.

Anyway, good job, B, for going out on a limb and attempting something out of the ordinary. Keep it up!

Oops, Sorry!

B got J ready for bed. C, J, B and I read a little of “Charlotte’s Web” (we are on chapter 12 or 13 of the classic novel - yes, the kids love listening to chapter books!  This is our 3rd book to read to them.  Another favorite was “The Mouse and the Motorcycle.”) and then I took J to his room to rock him awhile. J was in his cotton underwear and standard oversized t-shirt and was holding his stuffed dolphin that we got in Gulf Shores. The dolphin is aptly named Purpose the Porpoise.

While I was rocking J, he told me that he wanted to put on a pull-up so I would get him a sippy cup of warm milk. I agreed and while he got the pull-up out of his closet, I started to warm up the milk.

For dinner this evening, B took C out to dinner and I took J out to dinner for some one-on-one time with the boys. While it was fun, we all got tired.

Once the milk was finished and the top on the sippy cup, I helped J into his pull-up and then walked with him back to his room to rock him a little more and to tuck him in bed.

A little while later, after J had been in bed for about 10 minutes, he came out to tell us that his cotton underwear was still on, under his pull-up. Oops!

I still can’t believe that I didn’t notice or that J didn’t bother to take off his underwear before asking for help with his pull-up!

I guess this can be filed under “You know you are tired when…”

What’s a record?

I never dreamed that at age 33 I would feel so old.

Last night as I was getting J ready for bed, I was rocking him. He was upset at the shadows on the ceiling looking like a “dragon.” He was “afwaid of the dwagon.” I told J that all his stuffed animals would protect him and then thought of “Puff the Magic Dragon” and started to sing him part of the song.

I told J that I couldn’t remember all of the song, but knew that I had it somewhere (I think in my closet, but the song is unfortunately on a 45 record and we don’t own a record player) and would try to remember all the words and music to the song later.

When I mentioned to J that I had the music, J asked me, “on a CD?” and I said, “no, but I have it somewhere.” I guess I will have to pay iTunes a visit and burn it to a CD for his CD player in his room. This will make him happy.

C and J both know about tapes. Tapes are those plastic things that have the brown or black ribbon that they like to spread around the house…

Everything is Just Ducky

Finally the kids are in bed. Considering the mess the Coke made at dinner time, combined with the dirt from the park, the kids were a mess. No one would believe that I gave them baths BEFORE dinner! (yes, today!)

interlude… They have both gotten out of bed to go potty. C’s stomach is hurting. Hopefully it will get better soon. Otherwise it is going to be a long night. J went potty as well and came to tell us. I asked him if he needed any help in getting his underwear pulled all the way up and he lifted up his night shirt (0versized t-shirt) and voila! naked! I guess he needed help…

Anyway - back to the title of this blog…

I think it was Christmas this past year that Grandma and Grandpa gave the boys both duck hooded towels. The boys insist on using these towels after every bath :-)

Since C and J have been into good guy vs. bad guy role playing, B came up with names for them - which they love - when C and J are wearing their towels.

C is Darth Ducky

J is King Quacker

PS to Grandma and Grandpa -

Thanks Grandma and Grandpa for the delicious dinner on Friday night! The boys were talking about all the new stuff in your toy boxes and especially love the transformers!!

Define the word “Fun”

Also, this evening while we were at dinner with Nana and Pop at McDonald’s (a rare occurrence to get all four of us with both my parents), C decided to add to the conversations.  We were almost finished eating and the boys had played a little on the playground.  C piped up with, “Daddy, I’m finished eating.  You said we would go somewhere fun after dinner!”  (Obviously insinuating that to B, dinner with my parent is decidedly NOT fun.)

The faces my parents made were priceless!  They thought C was really funny.  However, their faces didn’t compare to the horrified look on B’s face!

B immediately retorted that he didn’t say that!  B said, “I said that we might go somewhere after dinner (to a park) and it might be fun - not that dinner with Nana and Pop wouldn’t be fun, too!”

The stuff that comes out of little mouths can have big reactions.  Fortunately we are close as a family and it caused a lot of laughter as opposed to hard feelings.  We just have to remember how the little ones interpret what we say!

Oh, this conversation happened after C knocked over B’s Coke and Pop’s sandwich got splatted on the floor…

God among us

My parents, Nana and Pop to the boys, called me this afternoon to see if B, the boys, and I wanted to meet them at McDonald’s for dinner. We agreed and decided on a time.  (Nana and Pop - Thanks for dinner!  It was both fun and educational :-) )

C and J were very excited to have dinner with Nana and Pop. We talked about the upcoming school year and various achievements of the boys - namely that J is now sleeping through the night in cotton underwear and waking up with it DRY!!!

Here was an interesting conversation:

Nana asked J, “What’s your name, boy?”

J answered, “J—-”

I then asked J, “What’s the rest of your name?”

J answered his middle name, “C—-”

Still having to prompt him (which is unusual since J usually answers that his name is J— C— Burns), I asked him, “What is the end of your name?”

J answered with a serious face, “God.”

Well, this explains a lot…
