Uh, Honey?!

This evening I went outside to the grill to cook some hamburgers. The grill would only heat to about 350 degrees. Not high enough to cook the burgers throughly.

After the french fries were cooked, I got out a cast iron skillet with the intention to go out and get the burgers to cook them on the stove. During the food preparations, the kids were in the living room. They were supposed to be watching a Veggie Tales DVD, but they were tired and acting up.

All B saw was me holding the skillet up in the air walking in the kitchen towards the living room…

Date Night

This evening B and I went out for a date night. Thanks, Jordan, for babysitting!!

First B and I went to a great dinner at Outback Steakhouse. We haven’t been there for quite a while. The onion appetizer was cooked perfectly. After dinner we had some time before the movie started so we checked out Best Buy. I found an awesome washer/dryer. We’ll have to do some comparison shopping, but I can visualize a really cool new set in my near future! B checked out the camera section while I browsed the music section. We left with lots of stuff added to our mental wish lists, but nothing in bags.

B let me pick the movie. I chose “No Reservations” with Catherine Zeta-Jones. It was a really good chick-flick and Rated PG. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It had a sweet story line, with some romance and comedy. Two thumbs up from me. It is one that I would want to purchase to see again, but not one that I would rush to the theater to see again. Prices for seeing movies is too ridiculous. I don’t know how high school kids date - dinner and a movie really costs lots!

Having a babysitter is great. Once we were seated at the restaurant, B said to me, “I don’t have a kid beside me and you don’t have one hanging on you!” I looked deep into his blue eyes and was content to be just with him. Same with holding his hand in the movie and as we were leaving. Thanks for the “twirl” as we were getting to the car, my love!

The End of Diapers!

When I went to Sam’s recently, I purchased a box of pull-ups for C’s and J’s respective closets. No more diapers to ever buy (or change)!!!!

Today I went to work and had a babysitter for the boys (Thanks, Jordan!). J woke up from his nap right after Jordan left and was upset that he didn’t get to give her a good-bye hug. A little bit later I realized that she let him go to bed in his underwear and shorts. J kept them dry!!!

I knew we were close to having J totally potty trained and we’re there. Last night I told him that I was going to start letting him wear underwear to rest time since he has been waking up from rest time and overnight with his pull-up dry. So, sleeping in cotton underwear has started for my littlest one.

Hallelujah! J had to be fully potty trained to go to 3 year old preschool and I was really fearful when I signed him up that he wouldn’t be ready. With 6 more weeks to go until school starts, he and C will be ready. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I told my boss today that school starts the first week of September and I will be able to work 2 days a week and that he will get tired of me being in the office. He said, “never” and that he would find stuff for me to do. Good answer, Ken!

Hey folks, it’s Dad. I don’t blog much – D writes and I photograph. However, I witnessed something funny with J worthy of a post.

One night C helped me make a Lego Big Rig and fuel tanker. At the end of the night, I put it on top of our TV to keep it safe from J’s oft destructive hands in the morning. I’ll come back to that in a moment.

The next morning J came into our room and woke me, which was not unusual by itself. However, there were a few clues that he had something else planned:

Clue 1: After a minute J advised me he was going back to bed to sleep. For reference, J has too much preplanned chaos to accomplish and does not want to waste daylight sleeping; therefore he does not go back to bed after rising.

Clue 2: When he left our bedroom, he closed and locked our bedroom door behind him. Whenever J is going to do something that he knows he should not, he closes all doors between himself and the adults and hides in a corner. Hearing the door lock let me know that trouble was about to be afoot.

My curiosity was piqued about his plot so I let him march to his destination and waited a few minutes before following. I checked everyplace but his room – and could not find him. I sat quietly on the couch in the kitchen where I have a direct line of sight into the living room. Was it possible that he had actually gone back to bed? As I pondered this unlikely possibility, the answer unfolded in front of me. I saw a small shadow moving slowing in the living room, and then the footstool to a chair came into view – as J pushed it quietly in front of the TV. He climbed on the stool – and proceeded to *quietly* place C’s Lego truck BACK on top of the TV – in the precise orientation it had been in the night before. Stealthily, he moved the footstool back in place and went back to bed for a few minutes before ‘waking up’. He was so engrossed in his craftiness that he never saw me watching.

I fear I should put 24 x 7 surveillance on this boy…

Toddler Whiplash

For Christmas last year, the boys received a Fisher Price Jeep Hurricane. It has two speeds - 2.5 mph and 5 mph. We have had the jeep on the lowest setting until this past Saturday.

This morning J wanted to go out front to ride his jeep. C was swinging out back, so I suggested that we get the jeep out of the garage and take it to the back yard. This was acceptable to J. As J was about to drive through the gate to the backyard, he hit the fence with the corner of the jeep and J got knocked forward and hit his head on the steering wheel. After I hugged him and kissed his head, J told me that he was alright and wanted to get “back in my driver’s seat and drive” the jeep.

Wow - 5 mph is really fast. The boys (with J driving at the moment) are in the jeep zipping around the backyard. With the additional speed, the jeep doesn’t get stuck as easily on the dew covered grass.

Oh, C just told J, “wait a minute. I need to put this up.” C came and tossed his blue blanket in the living room. I guess C is getting prepared to drive.

Sweet, Sour, or Dill dreams

Last night when I was ready to get in my bed, I checked on my sleeping boys. C was fine and I pulled up his covers to keep him warm. J was fine, too and had pulled up his covers himself. With both boys I always rub their cheeks, tell them that “I love you,” and if they stir ask them if they are okay or need anything.

C stirred a little and I put his blue blanket in his hand. J stirred quite a bit and when I asked him if he was okay or needed anything, his reply was, “pickles.” I asked him if he said “pickles” to confirm his request and J nodded his head “yes.”

No, I didn’t give him any pickles in his bed. I told him that I like pickles too, and that he could have some tomorrow. This satisfied him and I gave him his stuffed dolphin that he got when we were on vacation and stuffed black cat that he named, “Willie” after our cat that is in heaven. Then J rolled over and settled back into his pickled dreams.

I do wish I could know exactly what he was dreaming last night!
