Sweet Pain…
Posted July 16th, 2004 by Dad |
Riding a bicycle - both on and off the pavement - used to be one of my favorite pasttimes. From 1990 to 1993 I worked at a bike shop, a specialty bike store catering to medium and high end customers. It was probably the most fun job I have ever had. However, I sold my bicycle in 1995 before D and I got married to payoff some debts, and have regretted selling it ever since. (although I do not miss the debt
)
Fast-forward to 2003. D and I finally bought bicycles again, and a uber-cool pull behind trailer for C. We have put hundreds of fun miles on the bikes cruising around town, and loved every minute of it.
Fast-forward again one year to 2004. Specifically July 15, 2004. After work I went mountain biking at Shelby Farms with one of my coworkers, Doug. This was my first time offroad since 1994 - ten years away from the dirt.
I felt every bump on that trail.
I had forgotten what a difference there is between on pavement cycling and off pavement dirt pounding. Thankfully, Doug was kind enough to stop and wait for me periodically
as I got so winded sometimes I couldn’t move. At the end of the 5.75 mile course (a distance I can handle on pavement without breaking a sweat) I was ready to collapse. My side was splitting, my lungs were about to explode, and my arms felt like silly putty.
That was fun!
